Ice fishermen once again face a huge effort by non-ice fishermen to eliminate more ice fishing options. This year there are a number of new LD's being presented in the Legislature that will have a drastic effect on your ice fishing opportunities. The groups pushing these issues are TU, SAM/FIC, and DDAS. Who are these groups? Most everyone knows about Trout Unlimited and there should be no question about their intentions. SAM/FIC is also known as the Sportsmen Alliance of Maine Fishing Initiative Committee. Contrary to what many may think, this SAM committee is basically open water and flyfishing oriented and many members are not icefishers. The DDAS, aka Dud Dean Angling Society, is a small group of activist that are very anti-ice fishing and have been pushing much of the extreme fishing agenda here in Maine. One of the founders of DDAS, Robert Mallard, is the owner of Kennebec River Outfitters, a flyfishing shop located on Rt. 201 in Madison. There is a public meeting and discussion planned for Feb. 6th at 6pm and the location is the Monmouth Fish and Game. The MF&G is located on Rt. 202 in Monmouth.
